Research
I started my research activities in the fields of atmospheric pollution and boundary layer meteorology, both in measurements on the field and modelling. After that, my main interests progressively shifted towards the reconstruction of the evolution of Italian, Alpine and Mediterranean climate over the last 200/250 years. The data I analyzed encompass some of the longest Italian secular series (including the ones of the Observatories of Milano-Brera, Bologna and Mantova), the series included in the secular databases of the Hydrographic Service, the Air Force, and a large dataset of a wide European area centred over the Alpine area (UE Projects ALPCLIM and ALP-IMP). My researches focussed on:
- meteorological parameters evolution in terms of long-term trends and variability;
- detection of teleconnections between meteorological evolution in the Italian region and middle-to-large scale circulation indices;
- issues related to a possible evolution of drought/flood risks connected to variations in the spatial/temporal distribution of precipitation over the Mediterranean;
- detection of a possible solar signal in the temperature evolution in the last 200/250 years;
- definition of adaptation strategies for agriculture and electric system in the context of a changing climate;
- statistical techniques aiming at downscaling AOGCM projections (up to 100 years in the future) to local scale, in order to provide reasonable and critically-evaluated inputs for impact studies.
At present time my research activity mainly focuses on:
▪ reconstruction of past climate variability and change over the last 250 years for Italy, the alpine region and the Mediterranean region;
▪ assessment of the impact of climate variability and change on a wide range of activities including energy and water resources management;
▪ alpine glaciers evolution in the context of global warming;
▪ climate change signature in tree rings;
▪ development of new climate services focusing on procedures aiming at downscaling, at local scale (that is at a much higher resolution than the one typical of sparse meteorological networks) the information about climate variability and change.
▪ organization of citizen science activities in the field of old meteorological data rescue;
▪ reconstruction and analysis of Italian sunshine, cloudiness and visibility records for the last decades;
▪ development of learning tools in the area of climate change.

I’m referee of a number of scientific journals.

Co-operations
All my research activities concerning climate variability and change have been developed in close connection with the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, of the Italian National Research Council (ISAC-CNR) and I am associated to the staff of this institute. A 20-year-long co-operation between my research group and a corresponding research group of this institute has enabled the creation of a leading national and a well established international research group in the field of climatology. At national level, this group has filled the gap left by the lack of a national meteorological service, especially in terms of recovery, critical analysis and homogenization of a wide database of meteorological series from Italy and surrounding areas.
In 2017, I joined Department of Environmental Science and Policy of Milan University, where I work in close connection with Guglielmina Diolaiuti on the issue of climate change and high mountain environments. Other relevant cooperations mainly concern the impact of climate change on a wide range of sectors, including economy.
Beside the cooperation with ISAC-CNR and with colleagues of Milan University, the main other co-operations concerned:
- The Brera Astronomical Observatory and the Central Office of Agricultural Ecology, UCEA (now CRA-CMA) for the systematic recovery of new meteorological series.
- The Austrian Central Office for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) for scientific co-operation originating from EU research projects (ALPIMP and ALP-CLIM) and later extended to more projects.
- The Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) for the project ECA.
- The Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia (CRU-UEA) for the EU research projects IMPROVE and ALP-IMP. CRU-UEA represents the most influential research group in the world in the field of past climate reconstructions by means of instrumental historical series.
- The National Consortium of Universities for Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Physics (CINFAI). I have been delegate of the University of Milan at CINFAI.
Beside these co-operations, I developed also a lot of project-based co-operations with several other universities and scientific institutions.

Dissemination
I have about 30 years of activity in the field of dissemination, which is documented by a number of contributions on Italian newspaper and magazines, by several books addressed to a non-specialised audience, by training activities addressed to the staff of regional and local services and by a number of events organised to communicate climate change issues to a non-specialised audience.

Teaching
From September 1987 to October 1991 I worked as a teacher of Mathematics in secondary school. I also achieved the teacher training. From October 1991, since my appointment as a researcher, I have carried out didactic activity both in the fields of General Physics and Physics of the Atmosphere (Environmental Physics, Physics of the Atmosphere, Climatology and Meteorology, Lab of Environmental Physics, Lab of Physical Measurements of the Environment, Lab of Atmospheric Physics, Lab of Climatology, climate change: impact and adaptation).
I supervised the work of more than 100 students during their degree thesis and of 3 students during their PhD.
