IAMARTINO GIOVANNI

After getting my MA degree in English studies at the Catholic University of Milan in 1981 and teaching there and at the University of Sassari, I have been a Full Professor of English at the University of Milan since 2001, where I teach “History of English” and “Middle English Literature”.

I am currently the head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Milan.

The author of 2 monographs and some 70 papers, and the editor or co-editor of 7 volumes, my research focuses on the history of English lexicography and linguistic codification in general, on the history of Italian-English translation activity, and on
Anglo-Italian linguistic, literary and cultural relations.

I am currently one of the coeditors of the ‘class-A’ journal Studi Italiani di Linguistica Teorica e Applicata, and a member of the editorial or advisory boards of some academic journals and book series.

I am vice-president of SISSD, the Italian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, a fellow of the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere, and an elected member of some international associations. I co-chair an international research network for the history of language learning and teaching (HoLLT.net)

I was the chair of AIA – the Italian Society for English Studies (2015-2019), Director of CIRSIL – the Interuniversity Research Centre for the History of Foreign Language and Teaching (2010-2015), and Principal Investigator of 3 national PRIN projects (2004, 2007, 2009); I was awarded 4 research fellowships in 2 research centres in the USA.
