Scientific activity
The primary research interest has been the study of the functional morphology in invertebrates and in particular the main subjects are now:
a) Mutability phenomena in connective tissues of invertebrates from structural, mechanical properties and physiological point of view. Models: connective tissues of echinoderms and collagenous mesohyl of sponges.
b) An applied biomimetic approach to exploit marine-derived resources, in particular mutable connective tissues and their components, for the ex-novo design and development of biomimetic smart materials: films, scaffolds and substrata for cell culture studies, medical devices.
c) Autotomy and regenerative phenomena in echinoderms: mechanisms, cell lineages (stem cells or not) and factors involved. Models: arm regeneration in crinoids and ophiuroids; test regeneration in sea urchins; graft and visceral regeneration in crinoids. d) Effects of exposure to environmental contaminants and microplastics to the reproductive biology and regenerative potential in echinoderms. Models: reproductive biology in crinoids and echinoids; arm regeneration in crinoids.
