This volume constitutes the first publication of the Centre for visuaL hIs-
tOry (CLIO), set up in 2023 at the Department of Historical Studies ‘Federico
Chabod’ of the University of Milan in the context of the project ‘IMAGINeS:
Images and History’, financed by the MUR’s Departments of Excellence pro-
gramme for the period 2023-2027. The essays collected here represent a signifi-
cant contribution to the advancement of studies on visual culture from a histor-
ical perspective, in constant dialogue with the most innovative methodological
and theoretical instances.
