The SUSTAIN (SUbstrate and Systems of Trays for Agricultural INnovation) project aims to revolutionise Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) through the development of novel substrate-tray solutions for vertical farming.
The SUSTAIN (SUbstrate and Systems of Trays for Agricultural INnovation) project aims at developing a novel cultivation system by leveraging the potential of advanced materials, through the design of new substrates-tray systems. This project is particularly relevant for Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), which offers significant advantages in terms of agricultural resource efficiency, food security, and product quality. The core of the project is the development of a substrate-tray system designed to maximise the plant growth by means of recyclable materials custom-printed into tridimensional shapes, which will be individually optimised onto three crop types selected as models for leafy vegetables (lettuce), fruit vegetables (tomato) and aromatic plants (basil).
