Improving meat and eggs quality using low-glucosinate Camelina sativa meal as poultry feel (CAMSEED)

Project
CAMFEED is an integrated multidisciplinary proposal, which involves 3 research groups (CNR-IBBA, UNIMI, CNR-ISPA) with different expertise in agriculture, phytochemistry, plant genetics, food chemistry, poultry production, health and welfare. The main objective is to use low-glucosinolate (GSL) seeds of the new sustainable crop Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz in the diet of broilers and laying hens in order to obtain meat and eggs with a higher content of omega-3 and antioxidant compounds without affecting the production. The novelty of this approach lies in the use of a low-GSL camelina line, developed by the CNR-IBBA group, that allows feeding camelina at doses greater than 10% (currently above 10% incorporations depress animals for the presence of toxic GSLs). The use of this line will allow to increase the content of camelina meal in the diet and consequently the content in omega-3 and antioxidants in meat and eggs.
