Description
Stefano Ferrari obtained the laurea degree in Computer Science, Università degli Studi di Milano in 1995 and the Ph.D. in Computer and Automation Engineering, Politecnico di Milano in 2001.
From 1996 to 1998 he collaborates with the Laboratory of Human Motion Analysis and Virtual Reality, Neuroscience e Bioimages Institute, Italian National Research Council and with the Department of Bioengineering of Politecnico di Milano
From 1998 to 2001 he is Ph.D. student at Department of Electronics and Information of Politecnico di Milano. From 2001 to 2002 he is Research associate at the Department of Information Technology, Università degli Studi di Milano. From 2002 to 2016 he is Assistant professor at the Department of Information Technology, Università degli Studi di Milano. Since 2016 he is Associate professor at the Department of Computer Science, Università degli Studi di Milano.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY
The research activity tackled different areas of theory and application of soft computing and statistical learning paradigms. In particular, the main effort has been dedicated to the study of neural models and Support Vector Machines, and applications for measurement and representation of biometric signals.
* Multiscale paradigms for signal representation
The research considered tools for multiresolution signal representation.
A new self-configuring multiscale neural model (Hierarchical Radial Basis Functions network) has been developed and compared with the theoretical tool most used in the literature for multiscale signal processing (Wavelet transform).
Recently, a new multiscale model based on Support Vector Machines has been developed.
* Three-dimensional image processing
The reconstruction and representation of tridimensional surface has been the main applicative field of the neural models that have been studied, with particular focus on the problem of surface reconstruction from a dataset of noise affected sampled points.
Two different neural models (Enhanced Vector Quantization and Hierarchical Radial Basis Functions network) have been developed and applied to this problem.
* Signal processing
More general signal processing aspects have been subjected to the research activity.
In this field, both neural models and traditional techniques have been studied and applied.
In particular, the reasearch work focused on granulometry and diagnostic problems.
* Methodological aspects for composite systems specification and design.
The research in this field faced the problem of the implementation of soft computing paradigms. The traditional methodologies for designing embedded systems are base on algorithmic description of the specification. For the soft computing paradigms, such description exists only after the their configuration has been operated. The research work studied a new example based methodology, which can be integrated with the traditional methodology.
