1982 Graduated (Laurea) in Chemistry at the University of Milan

1986 Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. C. Scolastico at the University of Milano, working on new stereoselective methods for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds.

Academic and Professional Career:

1987-88 Post-doctoral research with Prof. W.Clark Still (Columbia University, New York). Worked on a molecular recognition project, developing the synthesis of a selective peptide binder.

1989 Researcher of Organic Chemistry, at the Department of Organic and Industrial Chemistry, University of Milan

1998 Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Milan

2005 Full Professor of Organic Chemistry, University of Milan

Research interests:
• Design and synthesis of glycomimetics
• Development of new stereoselective synthetic methodology
• Stereoselective synthesis of bioactive molecules
• Computer-assisted molecular design of stereoselective reagents and bioactive molecules.

She is regularly invited to give lectures at international conferences, as well as in Universities and industrial research centers in Europe and abroad.

She was the Director of the “Corbella” International Summer School of Organic Synthesis of the Italian Chemical Society from 2010 to 2013 and a member of the Scientific board of the Ischia Advanced School of Organic Chemistry (IASOC, 2016-2018).

She was a member of the board of the Computational Chemistry group (2006-2008) and a member of the board of the Carbohydrate group (2013-2015) of the Italian Chemical Society. She sits in the Board of Directors of the Organic Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society and has served as the national contact point for the Euchems Division of Chemistry for the Life Sciences (2015-2018).

She has participated as associated investigator to various cooperative research programs of the Italian Ministery of University and Research (COFIN, PRIN and FIRB projects) and to various funded cooperative projects of the European Union. She was responsible of the Molecular Modeling and Glycomimetic Design programmes of the Marie Curie Training Site DesDisSyn at the University of Milano; the coordinator of the COST D13 Working Group D13/012/00 (Title: Rational Design of Glycomimetics: Design, Synthesis and Evaluation of Mimics of Ganglioside GM1 as Cholera Toxin Ligands, ) and of the European Network Glycidic Scaffolds (New carbohydrate-derived scaffolds for the generation of bioactive libraries, HPRN-CT-2002-00173). She participated to the COST-D34 working group 0001/05 (Multivalent ligands for cholera toxin inhibition and sensing) and was a member of the COST Action CM1102, MultiGlycoNano.

She was also a member of the ITN Networks CARMUSYS (Carbohydrate Multivalent Systems as tools to study Pathogen interaction with DC-SIGN, FP7 PITN-GA-2008-213592, 2009-2012), Immunoshape (Selective Carbohydrate Immunomodulators targeting C-type Lectin Receptors on Antigen Presenting Cells, H2020-MSCA-ITN-2014-642870, 2015-2018) and PhD4GlycoDrug (Multidisciplinary Doctoral Study to Design and Develop Drugs that Target Medicinally Relevant Lectins, H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017-765581, 2018-2021).
