abstract:
Cilician Middle Armenian prose works contain a significant number of loanwords from French. The variety of French that must be considered the source of these loanwords is Outremer French, i.e. French as spoken in Near East in the Crusader States. The article provides a detailed analysis of the phonetic characteristics of these French loanwords in Middle Armenian. Thanks to its very rich inventory of graphemes, the Armenian alphabet reflects in a very accurate way the phonetic of the French words and therefore the French loanwords in Middle Armenian can be considered a very important witness for the knowledge of the phonetics of Outremer French.
