This Essay is a presentation of the volumes Pragmatics and Law edited by A. Capone and F. Poggi. The paper focuses on the question whether the Gricean Cooperative Principle can be applied to legal interpretation. The answer is that it cannot as legal language is a highly artificial language, where the context is quickly changing and the speakers are not interested in understanding each other’s point of view.
