Abstract:
A great many Russian popular prints (lubki) from the eighteenth-early nineteenth century as collected and recorded in D.A. Rovinskii’s five-volume catalogue Russkie narodnye kartinki (1881) connect in various ways (both genetically and typologically) with Western European sources and counterparts. These range from archetypical parallels, the borrowing of discrete motifs and themes, and the paraphrase and imitation of pictorial subjects, to the more or less exact copying and calquing of entire prints. This article gives an overview of the most important research on this topic from Rovinskii to the present and suggests some hitherto unidentified Western sources of Russian popular prints.
