Abstract:
The following study will focus on groundwater flow, contaminant transport and pollutants degradation
in environment with heterogeneous geology. The aim is to identify different approaches to model these
areas and to evaluate the anthropogenic impact on groundwater, focusing on both quantity and quality
of the resource.
The study is based on real data coming from an area with heterogeneous geology and complex
hydrogeological setting. The selected area is the Venetian Plain (NE Italy) because several geological,
hydrogeological and hydrological data are collected in a sizeable database realized by Provincia di
Venezia and data from a monitoring network for the groundwater contamination of an old landfill are
available.
The research is divided in three different steps.
The first part describe the groundwater flow and evaluate the impact of the human activities and works
in the area for its exploitation and its protection.
The second part focus on a smaller area but with a high density of data. Three different approaches to
simulate the subsoil were compared evaluating which need less data to reproduce better the advective
transport.
The third part evaluate with different approaches the effects of an enhanced bioremediation system.
The impressing amount of data available in the selected area and a deep study on the factors interacting
with the groundwater allow to reconstruct the architecture of the subsoil using the hydraulic conductivity
field and to realise different groundwater flow models. The models have permitted to identify the
interaction between the human works (impermeable barriers, drain, remediation systems, etc) with the
groundwater and to evaluate the effects that can be produced in the area.
Different approaches were used to reconstruct the hydraulic conductivity field in the area where more
data are available (Porto Marghera). Several simulation based on different data density scenarios were
realized to evaluate flow and advective transport parameters of the approaches. Approaches based on
geological data and on hydraulic conductivity were used to evaluate the reliability of the models in
function of the data density.
The last part focus on the reactive transport of pollution (chlorinated solvent) evaluating the effects of
the natural and the enhanced biodegradation on a plume originated from an old landfill located in the
neighbouring of the previous area. Different analytical methods and numerical models were applied.
Therefore, it was possible to identify where the bioremediation, natural or enhanced, is more active and
to evaluate the time necessary for a complete remediation of the site.
This research improves the knowledge of an area with an heterogeneous geology creating a technical
and scientific study to support the future works in the area and to evaluate the reliability of different
methods to simulate groundwater flow, transport and biodegradation of pollution.
