In the pages of the Metalogicon, John of Salisbury uses the Latin term compendium and its derived forms to refer to human disciplines that seek to give an order to the meandering natural paths. But compendium is also used to indicate the metaphoric expressions that extend the meaning of some terms beyond the proper one, thanks to compendious statements that can help learned men. Suggestions about the manner of metaphorically referring the term compendium to the artes are especially interesting, not least because this term is – in its turn – metaphorically used to refer to the metaphor itself.
