Stone treatment in solitary kidney

The treatment of stones in solitary or transplanted kidney aims at stone clearance and at preservation of renal function. We present a review of the literature and two new studies on our experience with ESWL regarding a 3 to 18 months follow-up in 10 patients with a solitary kidney and a 3 to 12 months follow up in 8 patients with transplanted kidney. While open surgery has a limited role, ESWL, percutaneous nephrolithotomy or the combination of those two procedures appear to be the treatment of choice with minimal effects on renal function.
