Relative aspects for the development of prolonged release oral dosage forms

The document represents an attempt to define the rationale for the development of prolonged release oral dosage forms. Such a rationale is based on pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic, biopharmaceutical and technological considerations. Moreover a stepwise scheme is proposed for the development of such dosage forms.
