Abstract:
Pascal is not only a Cartesian critic of Descartes: he is first and foremost an interpreter of Descartes. And by this term we mean a philosopher who thinks after Descartes, starting from Descartes and in many cases against Descartes, elaborating with Cartesian tools theses that Descartes would most likely have considered unacceptable. The Pensées offer multiple examples of this interpretive work done by Pascal out of Cartesian theses. Among the most eloquent is that provided by the famous pensée devoted to “imagination”. Pascal thinks imagination, starting from and against Descartes, thus thinking something that Descartes judged unthinkable or at least inadmissible
