Rilevanza delle eteroforie nella sindrome astenopica di operatori ospedalieri addetti ad apparecchiature informatizzate dotate di video (AIDV)

In a prevalence study conducted on 110 hospital staff who use Video Display Units (VDU) for more than 20 hours a week, the frequency of asthenopia was found to be 57%, with a greater frequency in females (63.6%) than in males (47.7%). Inadequate lighting conditions in the work place were found for only 4 asthenopic operators. There was no evidence of a significant correlation between asthenopia and pre-existing refractive problems, while heterophoria documented using the orthoanalyser examination (Ergovision device) proved to be significantly related to asthenopia. Therefore, the detection of heterophorias is important for establishing correct ethiologic attributions of asthenopia in VDU operators.
