The ecclesiastical heritage, initially concentrated in the hands of the bishop, starting from the barbarian age had begun to be divided between parishes and monastic communities, which over time became subjects of right. In a rural economy it soon became natural to link immovable property to an ecclesiastical function, the income of which was intended to support the holder of the office: the property remained of the Church, but the ecclesiastic was entitled to full enjoyment. The theme of the relationships between the parish priest and the ordinary and between the parish priest and the community of the faithful is reconstructed in the recent volume of Brigitte Basdevant-Gaudemet, starting from the Church of the first centuries, up to the IV Lateran Council of 1215 which will mark the end of an era and a turning point towards a new âge characterized by the apogee of papal omnipotence.
