abstract:
Aim. To describe and critically summarize the criteria and requirements for selecting patients on oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT) who could follow a self monitoring (SM) educational pathway. Methods. A systematic review was performed in June 2016, using a meta- narrative approach to analyze the content of the included papers. PubMed, Scopus, and CINHAL were searched systematically, using keywords and methodological queries, for studies from the last ten years. The PRISMA flowchart and a qualitative assessment tool (JBl-QARl) were used to guide the selection process. The included papers were analyzed using the methodology described by Greenhalgh I! in 2005, i.e., a meta-narrative approach to systematic reviews. Findings. Twelve papers were included. The identified criteria, based on the study's aims, were: patients' age, clinical condition, therapy, international normalized ratio (INR) target range, compliance, knowledge, willingness, cognitive efficacy, capacity to communicate, and quality of life. The identified requirements defined the inclusion/exclusion parameters of each identified criterion. Conclusions. Identification of the criteria and requirements aimed at selecting tvhich patients treated with OAT fit the SM educational pathway could represent a first step toward the homogenization of clinical practice, boosting empirical research.
