Abstract:
In the landscape of Modern Indo-Aryan languages Romani shows a very peculiar consonantism, which represents the endpoint of different phonological innovations. Among these innovations two of the most significant changes are devoicing of Old Indo-Aryan aspirate voiced stops and transference of aspiration from an interior Old Indo-Aryan aspirate stop to the onset of the first syllable. Several other innovations have shaped the facies fonetica developed by Romani in its history, especially with reference to the word initial position; among these innovations, fricativization of OIA kh- and defricativization of OIA v- seems rather relevant. The article explores the historical relations among these changes, focusing in particular on their relative chronology.
