Urgent and innovative restoration actions for resilient forests of the future

Project
The main objective of LIFE FOREST4FUTURE is to restore 485,37 ha of Annex I habitats of the Habitats Directive in 8 Natura 2000 sites in Lombardy and Piedmont. Target habitats include 6 forest types (91F0, 91E0*, 91H0*, 9160, 9180*, 9110) and 1 grassland (6210), all in unfavourable and declining conservation status. The project will implement an adaptive, resilient and multifunctional Nature-Based Solution (NBS) forest model to: (i) control invasive alien species , (ii) restore native oak-dominated forests, (iii) enhance ecosystem resilience to climate change, and (iv) improve conditions for Annex II and IV fauna species. Actions are based on a scientifically grounded framework, including climate vulnerability mapping, genetic selection of resilient oaks, and adaptive silvicultural protocols. A Forest Agreement governance tool and a certification scheme for ecosystem services (carbon, biodiversity, water) will ensure long-term sustainability, replication and financial leverage beyond the project lifetime. The project fosters strong stakeholder engagement, actively involving park authorities, forest owners, research bodies and local communities. A dedicated training programme will build capacity among forest managers and technicians, ensuring the uptake and long-term integration of the innovative approaches developed. The project ensuring GPP and DNSH, reduction of CO2 emissions, sustainable resource use and measurable green management indicators. Awareness and citizen science campaigns will engage more than 50,000 people, building a culture of climate-smart forest management. LIFE FOREST4FUTURE contributes to the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the EU Forest Strategy for 2030, the Habitats Directive, the Regulation on Invasive Alien Species, the EU Green Deal and the EU Observatory on Deforestation and Forest Degradation, acting as a catalyst for innovative forest.
