SENES GIULIO

Giulio Senes, Ph.D., is Associate Professor at the University of Milan, Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, where he teaches “GIS for rural Territory” in the Master of Science in Agricultural Sciences, “Land Planning” in the Master of Science in Sustainable Natural Resource Management, and “Green infrastructures Planning and Design” in the Master of Science in Landscape Architecture.
At the University of Milan, he has been the Director of the Post-Graduate Courses in “Healing Gardens Design” (2007-2013) and “GIS for mountain areas” (2009). He is also member of the Organizing Committee for the Master of Science in “Valorization and Sustainable Development of Mountain Areas” (since 2021) and for the “first level master's course” in “Mountain Project Management” (since 2022), both at the University of Milan.
He is member of the “Commission on Scholarships and Right to study” of the University of Milan (since 2019) and is the Departmental contact person of the “Disabled and Specific Learning Disorders Services” of the University of Milan (since 2011).
He has been member of the Teaching Collegium of the University of Milan Ph.D. Programs in Rural buildings and agro-forest land planning (2004-05), in Technological innovation for agri-food and environmental sciences (from 2005-06 to 2012-13), in Agriculture, environment and bioenergy (from 2013-14 to 2017-18). He is actually Tutor in the Ph.D. Programme in “Intersectoral innovation” of the University of Milan.
He is member of the Accademia dei Georgofili, the Italian Society of Agricultural Engineering (AIIA), the National Institute of Urban Planning (INU), the Italian Association of Landscape Architecture (AIAPP), the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA), the City Space Architecture Association (CSAA), the Rural Landscape Protection and Valorisation Working Group of the International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (CIGR). He is President of the European Greenways Association, founder and member of the Steering Committee of the Italian Greenways Association, the Italian Alliance for Soft Mobility (AMODO), and the Italian Healing Gardens Association.
He is member of the Professional Association of Agronomists and Forestry Doctors (Since 1998) and he is appointed member of the Department of "Planning and sustainable management of the territory" of the Regional Federation of Agronomists and Forestry Doctors of Lombardy (since 2022).
In 2022 he has been appointed by Ministerial Decree member of the Group of Experts for the Ecological Transition of Mobility and Infrastructures of the Italian Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility.
He has passed study periods in several foreign Universities and Research Centres and is visiting Professor at the Facultad de Agronomia of the Universidad de la Republica di Montevideo (Uruguay), for the “Licenciatura in Diseño De Paisaje”.
His research activity is related to the following topics: assessment, planning and design of rural territory and landscape; analysis, assessment, planning, design, management and valorization of rural infrastructures and greenways; evolution of land use / land cover changes and land take quantification and assessment; assessment of the ecosystem services provided by the rural territory; planning and design of green infrastructures and nature-based solutions, to increase the resilience of the territory in response to climate changes; analysis, design and management of green areas; study of the relationship between human well-being and contact with nature; Evidence Based Design of healing gardens and related Post Occupancy Evaluation; therapeutic horticulture.
He has been “Foreign Examiner” for the PhD Programs on Civil Engineering of the Madurai University and the Anna University, in India (2007-2020) and member of the “Scientific Evaluation Committee” of the Doctoral Programme Horizon 2020 - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, Cycle XXXVIII, PhD Course in “Land, Environment, Resources and Health” Of the University of Padua (2022).
He has been reviewer of the research projects for the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation, in Georgia (2011-2016). He is reviewer of the research projects for the Italian Ministry of Research, FIRB program (since 2012) and PRIN program (since 2020). He has been reviewer for the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR), VQR 2015-19.
He is reviewer of the following scientific journals: “Ecological Indicators”, “Cities” and “Land Use Policy” (Elsevier); “Local Environment”, “Journal of Environmental Planning and Management” and “Cogent Psychology” (Taylor & Francis); “Frontiers in Psychology” (Frontiers); “International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health”, “Brain Sciences”, “Sustainability”, “Land”, “Forests”, “Agronomy” and “Energies” (MDPI); Landscape and Ecological Engineering (Springer).
