Description
Alessandro Provetti (Salsomaggiore Terme, 1966) studied Informatics at University of Milan, Computer Engineering at Imperial College London, and was awarded his PhD from University of Bologna.
He was a post-doc in La Coruna (Spain), assistant professor at U. Of Texas-El Paso and associate professor in Messina.
His PhD was in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI), where he studied agents with practical reasoning capabilities, e.g., planning trips or filtering out spam e-mails.
In 2002-2006 he coordinated a European working group on Answer Set Programming, funded by the FET-Open EU agency and is now co-PI of an EU COST initiative on applying techniques from 'logical' AI to the analysis of forensic evidence.
Through several scientific collaborations he has developed randomized algorithms for analysing the special features of user data, i.e., created freely by user interactions, on "Social Web" platforms (online social networks, online virtual worlds or review web sites), as they raise specific scalability and confidentiality issues.
Since 2010 his research focus has been the automated extraction and analysis of data from the Web.
His current work is on analysing traces of online user-to-user interaction on, e.g., the Prosper micro-lending platform, to find the conditions that make “networks of trust” emerge.
Currently he is on the editorial board of Patterns, the Data Science journal by Cell Press.
