abstract:
The dressing of injured skin has to absorb exudate, not interfere with healing, be permeable, be non adherent and control infections. Allantoin 5% PolyEthylenGlycoles (PEG) ointment is the topical preparation grouping these characteristics. This ointment has been used for ulcer dressing and after epidermal surgery in our Dermatological Ambulatory since 1998. Allantoin 5% PEG ointment was applied either directly on the skin or gauze smeared. The results obtained allowed to decrease healing time by 40% and to reduce cost by 60%. In conclusion Allantoin 5% PEG ointment can be a valid and non-expensive dressing for cutaneous ulcer healing.
