abstract:
Non-invasive brain stimulation in psychiatry
Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has shown considerable development in the last twenty years for neurophysiological research, for psychological and cognitive investigation and for the clinical treatment of a wide spectrum of neuropsychiatric conditions. Especially the main NIBS techniques, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have reached levels of efficacy that are recognized in the algorithms recommended by the guidelines for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the main therapeutic clinical applications in psychiatry of NIBS techniques, in particular in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia.
