abstract:
This paper focuses on a small group of glosses in the Liber Glossarum, tagged Augustini, yet actually depending on Isidore’s works. In most cases, Isidore’s main source for these passages quoted in the LG is indeed a text of Augustine: it is likely that the anonymous compiler of the LG carefully compared Isidore’s text with other works available in his scriptorium. This preliminary work could be ascribed also to unidentified sources used by the compiler. Sometimes the collation seems to have led to a re-edition of some Isidore’s passages, produced by combining and contaminating them with Augustine’s texts. However, it is clear that the compiler of the LG understood Isidore’s Etymologiae as a key reference point in the organization of knowledge.
