INTERGEN investigates how intergenerational political conflict in Europe’s aging societies is structured, becomes politically salient, and shapes democratic representation. The project provides critical insights into generation-based conflict and solidarity over pressing policy issues, as well as the political inequalities that emerge from these divides. Using a mixed-method research design – including longitudinal survey analysis, original voter surveys, survey experiments, and AI-driven political text analysis – INTERGEN examines how structural disadvantages and inequalities shape intergenerational grievances, identities and policy preferences, and how these divides impact the political (under)representation and democratic engagement of younger generations. The outcomes of INTERGEN will provide critical insights into the growing political tensions in ageing societies, where older generations hold increasing political influence compared to the young. It offers a forward-looking perspective on the future of democratic participation and policymaking in societies facing profound generational challenges.
