- The ASCO Cancer Foundation Merit Awards will be presented to twenty-five leading oncology trainees from around the world for their important contributions to gastrointestinal cancers research. This year’s recipients will be recognized at the 2011 Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancers Symposium, which takes place January 20-22, 2011 in San Francisco, CA. “These intelligent young researchers have demonstrated passion for improving the quality of life for people living with gastrointestinal cancers,” said Steven A. Curley, MD, chair of the GI Symposium Steering Committee. “We are proud to recognize this year’s recipients and hope these awards will strengthen their commitment to advancing clinical cancer diagnosis, treatment and research.” The ASCO Cancer Foundation Merit Awards are designed to promote clinical cancer research by young investigators and provide them with the opportunity to present their research at the 2011 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium. Recipients were selected based on the scientific merit of their abstracts and will receive funding to help with travel expenses to attend the meeting. This year’s Symposium will feature more than 600 abstracts on a variety of gastrointestinal cancers including cancers of the esophagus, stomach, hepatobiliary, pancreas, small bowel, colon and rectum. These cancers are diagnosed in approximately 275,000 people, and are responsible for nearly 140,000 deaths in the U.S. every year. The 2011 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium is co-sponsored by four leading medical specialty societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO).
