Description
Biography
Paolo Arosio is currently associate professor at Physics Department of Università degli Studi di Milano. The research activity is principally focused on the magnetism of magnetic materials and the morpho-dimensional studies on biological samples in the Magnetism and Nanometric Systems group of the Physics Department. He collaborates with numerous Italian and European research groups. Since 2011 P.A. is responsible of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance experimental activity of his research group.
Education
- PhD in Materials Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, date: 25-05-2006. Thesis under the supervision of prof. Stefano Valdo Meille on structural and morphological studies of macromolecular systems for advanced applications.
- Degree in Chemistry at Università degli Studi di Milano. Graduation date : 29.10.2002. Final-year thesis under the supervision of Dr Marco Scavini on “EXAFS study of structure of Oxygen defects in Nd2-xCexCuO4+δ superconductor”.
Current Research Interests
- Physical and physico-chemical studies of novel magnetic multifunctional nanoparticles (MNPs) by means of NMR relaxometry, magnetic hyperthermia, magnetometry and Atomic/Magnetic Force Microscopy (AFM/MFM). MNPs are forefront materials due to their possibility to act as theranostic agents in diagnosis and treatment of different diseases, like tumors and inflammatory processes. Indeed they could act as Contrast Agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and at the same time, once functionalized with drugs, as possible vectors for local pharmacological treatment (drug delivery), as well as fluids for magnetic hyperthermic treatment on tumor cells.
- Study of physical and magnetic properties of molecular magnets and low-dimensional magnetic clusters using NMR and Muon Spin Resonance. These kind of systems contain a “core” of metallic ions (till 30) magnetically isolated one each other by an organic “shield”. This structural property allow fundamental studies of single molecule (single molecule magnets, SMM, or molecular nanomagnets, MNM) using bulk quantities of sample. MMM/SMM materials are interesting because they put together the macroscopic properties of a bulk magnet and the quantum properties of nanoscale systems opening novel possibilities for technological applications (qubit, magneto-caloric effect, quantum sensing, etc.).
- Production and characterization of gel dosimeters as ideal candidates for performing 3D reconstruction of dose distribution. In details, Fricke gel (FG) dosimeters are extensively studied for their dosimetric potential properties due both to the use of solutions of ferrous sulfate (in which the radiation induced production of ferric ions depends on the irradiation dose) and to the rigidity of the gel matrix, which hinders the ferric ions from freely diffusing in the matrix.
