Abstract:
The genus Hypericum is the most important of the Hypericaceae family, widespread all over the world; the most known species of the genus is Hypericum perforatum L., which was utilized since ancient times for its medicinal properties. All the Hypericum species present, in their aerial parts, internal secreting structures, represented by translucent glands, present in all Hypericum species, and black nodules. The latter are the most characteristic secreting structures of the genus and present a particular morphology, never observed in other secreting structures. Hypericin, the molecule responsible for the photodynamic, antidepressive and antiviral activities of the plant, is produced and stored in this type of glands. The distribution and morphology of translucent glands and black nodules are reported.
