Abstract:
Objective: To assess the relationship between the child's birth-weight and his/her development at 18 months of age, by means of a postal questionnaire to parents. Methods: This study deals with children of women admitted to first level maternity hospitals and who were born within the framework of the Italian Study of Aspirin in Pregnancy (ISAP). Eighteen months after delivery we sent a postal questionnaire to the parents of 861 singleton children, regarding the children's height, weight, respiratory, hearing and vision problems, and other items taken mainly from the Griffiths' Developmental Scales. Results: A total of 623 (72.4%) questionnaires was returned. There were 94 children weighing <2500-1500g at birth and 19 <1500g. Children with weight and height below the 10th percentile at 18 months were significantly more frequent in the low birthweight group (p<0.01). Motor problems were about six times more common in children with birth-weight less than 25OOg than in those with birth-weight ≥ 2500g (p<0.001). Admission to hospital was more common in children with birth-weight less than 2500g (p<0.01). Conclusions: This study confirms the differences in growth and development between children in low and those in normal birth-weight groups and suggests that this follow-up methodology might be used in order to compare large cohorts of infants included in randomised clinical trials.
