Abstract:
What is Mead’s contribution in the general framework of pragmatism and of a philosophically informed Darwinism? The American philosophers accepts the possibly most difficult challenge to evolutionary conceptions: he does not merely postulate an evolutionary continuity between lower (less complex) and higher (more complex) forms and activities. Rather, he sets out to show how the transition to rationality is realized. How do some biological organisms acquire the capacity to be self-conscious, to think, to reason abstractly, to behave intentionally, to possess a moral inclination? Mead’s decisive contribution pertains specifically to the genealogy of rational animal. In this paper I want to discuss or, if you wish, question both key axes of Mead’s analysis of language and, hence, of his genesis of the mind, as the title suggests.
