Abstract:
The economic boom in Italy brought large scale growth in the publishing industry, as witnessed by the increase in the number of titles produced and the expansion of the market. The period also saw the broadening and consolidation of an articulate middle and working class readership characterised by a lively range of interests and both average and average-to-high consumer spending. At the same time, however, extensive subordinate and marginalised social strata continued to exist. These were years in which, despite the altered scenario, there remained in force the persistent legacy of the historical juxtaposition of privilege and deprivation and the traditional logic of two cultures. The part played in this process by intellectual-publishers and the concomitant focus on nonfiction and literature were the crucial factors behind the success of the cultural publishing houses set up in Italy during the postwar economic boom, such as Il Saggiatore, Feltrinelli, Adelphi, among others.
