Abstract:
Russia as Place of Action in Contemporaiy Polish Literature (Slawomir Mrożek, Janusz Głowacki, Jacek Dukaj). Α cursory survey of Polish literary fiction reveals only a handful of works in which Russia occurs as a scene of action. Most of these works (the earliest dating back to the beginning of the 19th century) deal with subjects connected with the intricate common histoiy of both nations, such as the Polish Intervention in Russia during the Time of Troubles, Siberia as the place of exile of Polish participants of 19th century insurrections etc. Against this background, the repeated occurrence of Russian locations in some major works of Polish contemporary literature is quite notable and deserves an explanation. The present paper analyses the different functions of Russia as the place of the action in S. Mrożek’s Love in Crimea (1993), J. Głowacki’s The Fourth Sister (1999) and J. Dukaj’s Ice (2007).
