Abstract:
In the history of historiography, the studies devoted to the presence of a skeptical inspiration in medieval philosophy follow an interesting line of development that seems to repeat some steps characteristic of skepticism itself.
In particular the scholars have considered Nicholas of Autrecourt from different points of view that emphasized, from time to time, some special aspects: from the beginning of the twentieth century, when he appears as representative of a metaphysics that questions the Aristotelianism and the great synthesis of scholastic philosophy, up to recent studies that analyze in detail his epistemology.
Skepticism can be considered as combination of moments logically connected even if not in a systematic way; in the same manner the thought of Nicholas presents aspects not systematically organized, that should be emphasized highlighting his different argumentation strategies.
