Abstract:
The aim of the investigation is to evaluate the cognitive outcome of 40 patients with epilepsy who did not undergo any surgery procedures, 100 patients with epilepsy who underwent neurosurgery, and 50 controls, in a 5 years longitudinal study, in order to identify possible significant differences. We found a statistical significant difference related to age between S. Paolo patients (who did not undergo surgery) and Niguarda patients (who underwent surgery); neuropsychological results of Niguarda patients at the beginning of the research were globally better than those of S. Paolo patients. We noticed a statistical significant difference on all cognitive variables among the three groups, but when we corrected for age final results, we did not highlight statistical significant differences. This is a preliminary study for further analysis, which could deeply investigate the impact of epilepsy on cognitive profile over years.
