Abstract:
Background: patients safety is a priority for healthcare organization, but errors during therapeutical processes can sometimes interfere with such goal. It is known in literature that most errors occur while administering drugs.
Objectives: to evaluate the knowledge of Nursing students regarding administration errors, the need for reporting them, the students’ perceptions about under-reporting, and the factors leading to errors.
Materials and methods: the Italian version of the Gladstone questionnaire was administered through SurveyMonkey ® to all Nursing students enrolled for their last year at the University of Milan. Data were analyzed with STATA® 11.
Results: 201 questionnaires were analyzed. 79.6% of the students felt they would be able to recognize errors, but less than 70% actually recognized administration errors, in five of the six simulated scenarios included in the questionnaire.
63.7% reported doubts regarding incident reporting, which only in 2 cases was correctly used by the students. The main causes of error were difficulties in understanding medical prescriptions, as well as “look alike-sound alike” drugs.
Conclusions: the students provided conflicting answers to the questionnaire; it is necessary to carefully monitor this phenomenon, in order to consolidate their knowledge about administration errors.
