Abstract:
This article is composed of three parts written by scholars of medieval
numismatics, E.A. Arslan, L. Travaini and M. Bompaire, and by F. Miele, the
archaeologist who found the hoard in 1997 in a site called Torrione at Alife in
the Northern area of Campania in Italy, near a Roman monumental grave. The hoard includes 635 coins, all billon denari with the exception of 4 gold taris, together with a silver cross, buried in a vase. Arslan, who firstly classified the coins, offers a general introduction to the other contributions. Miele provides a brief summary of the historical and archaeological context and some details about the excavation findings. Travaini (with collaboration of Monica Baldassarri and Marco Bazzini) catalogues and comments the Italian coins and Bompaire catalogues and comments the French feudal denari.
