Abstract:
After having introduced the concept of illness, and the value of telling stories in patients’ and relatives’ attempt to find a meaning to their sufferance, the well-established reflective model of family education, based on life narratives, will be briefly recalled. Then, an English and an Italian experience, both conducted with relatives of people suffering from severe mental diseases, and both based on autobiographical narratives (respectively, oral and written), will be reported. In those who have gone through the experience of serious mental illness, narrating can become an opportunity to reorganize past events, which may allow the discovery of new connections and meanings, as well as recovery, and therefore change and growth.
