Abstract:
In 1931, the second Spanish Republic tried to establish a new territorial constitution, based
on the fascinating but tricking concept of “autonomy”. That term is essential to understand
the prismatic world of Spanish nationalisms, because it sinks its roots in the large reflection
on the 'soul' of sovereignty and his relationship with territory and democracy, started with the
“Desatre del 98”. This paper tries to outline the different faces that this concept was taking
during the first 30 years of XXth Century, between admiration for Western Culture and
construction of many different identities.
