Abstract:
A number of different agro-industrial crops and by-products were evaluated for biochemical methane potential (BMP) by using of an automated laboratory-scale multi-batch system and at the same time the microbial communities of the relative anaerobic digestion (AD) processes were investigated by DNA-based methods. High BMP were obtained by using energy crops as well as several agro-industrial biomasses. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA gene of Archaea showed the prevalence of genus Methanosarcina. DGGE profiles analysed by principal component analyses (PCA) indicated for most of the samples significant variations of archaeal community between the beginning and the end of the AD processes. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) showed that the Methanosarcinales (MSL) were the majority of the archaeal community in the reactors and that sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were present at low titers.
