Abstract:
Objectives
The aim of this prospective, randomized trial is to evaluate whether a corticosteroid therapy (dexamethasone sodium phosphate, 4 mg) in association with an exhaustive preoperative planning and a minimal invasive surgical technique can shorten and make up for the most common temporary disorders.
Materials and methods
The trial was performed choosing the split-mouth study design, randomly assigning in each patient the side to be given the investigated drug. Fifteen volunteers were chosen (7 males and 8 females), aged between 18 and 45 years, requiring both mandibular third molar surgery belonging to the same Winter and Pell e Gregory classes. The administration of the drug was randomly assigned and concealed in opaque envelopes which were opened just before surgery, allocating the patients to two groups. The experimental group received dexamethasone (Soldesam), 4 mg, as intramuscular injection. The patients’ perception of the severity of their symptoms was assessed with a VAS scale and statistically evaluated.
Results and conclusions
Clinical results show how local intraoperative use of dexamethasone sodium phosphate may lead to a more comfortable postoperative healing time, especially in the first hours after surgery.
