Seicento anni dall’inizio del ducato di Filippo Maria Visconti (1412) : studi e ricerche recenti

This review article deals with recent studies on the reign of Filippo Maria Visconti as duke of Milan (1412-1447). It ranges from research on Milanese economy, society and finance to political and diplomatic history, from cultural and court life to church history; contribution to the history of art are also considered in so far as they reflect political and institutional realities. The basic question whether this 35 year period can be viewed as a coherent and distinctive phase in the history of Milan is answered in the affirmative by most scholars. The article finally points to some themes where further research seems desirable.
