Abstract:
Intermittent ischaemia of the renal parenchyma was obtained by clamping the renal artery in the rat and its effects were determined in terms of morphological change and histochemical evaluation of enzymatic alterations. Attention was confined to the artery only by analogy with situations observed in man, especially in reconstructive surgery. It was found that a long initial period (max. 45') of ischaemia appears to 'protect' the parenchyma from the effects of further ischaemia, whereas tubular damage to the point of irreversibility was the outcome of increasingly shorter initial (and subsequently once or twice repeated) periods. The same effect was obtained when the intervening free flow period was lengthened.
