Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to investigate impairment in social
adjustment and self-esteem of bipolar patients (n=144) in remission for
at least 3 months. Patients were recruited among four different centres:
Sofia, Athens, Jerusalem and Milan, and were individually matched to
control subjects in relation to sex, age and geographical origin.
Subjects completed the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (SES) and the
self-report version of the social adjustment scale (SAS). Bipolar
patients reported to experience more difficulties in social adjustment
than controls, specifically for leisure and work activities. Further,
our results show that bipolar patients have significantly lower
self-esteem compared to controls, even after remission. (C) 2002
