Abstract:
Two-dimensional (2-D) and 3-dimensional (3-D) transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) using new 3-D software was performed in 30 patients who underwent percutaneous closure of ostium secundum atrial septal defects. Two-dimensional TEE significantly underestimated the balloon-stretched diameters, whereas no significant difference was found between the invasive measurement and the 3-D major diameter of the atrial septal defect. Three-dimensional TEE better delineated the complex shape. and dynamic changes of the defect, confirmed the correct opening of the device and revealed its spatial relations with adjacent cardiac structures.
