Abstract:
The dinuclear [Re2(CO)6(m-1,2-diazine)(m-X)2] complexes (X = anionic ligand, typically halide) are currently attracting attention, in light of their chemical and electrochemical stability coupled with considerable solution and solid state photoluminescent performances. Applications in electroluminescent devices and cell imaging have been reported. Wavelengths, lifetimes and quantum yields of the emission can be modulated by varying the diazine substituents,3 achieving photoluminescent quantum yields (PLQY) up to 0.53 for complexes containing pyridazine bearing alkyl substituents in both the positions.
In this context we turned our attention towards 4-aryl-1,2,4-triazole and 5-aryl-tetrazole as ligands, on the basis of their expected ability to bridge two rhenium atoms and to increase the HOMO-LUMO gap, in order to modulate the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of the resulting complexes.
Here we present the two novel neutral dinuclear Re(I) complexes shown in the Chart, in which the triazole and tetrazole-based molecules act as bridging ligands, through the nitrogen atoms. The synthesis, the photophysical and electrochemical properties, together with the nature of the frontier orbitals for both the complexes, will be presented in detail.
