Abstract:
An unusual phenomenon in the first half-century after World War II, the Italian Right has also confirmed its originality compared with other European countries in the period that followed. First, it identified with neo-fascism, having oscillated between rejecting the legacy of the Fascist period and embracing a specific issue raised by the new European Right, that of the protest anti-immigrant. After a period (the Nineties) in which MSI-AN and the Lega Nord fought for control of the political market of xenophobia, in the following decade Bossi’s party secured a monopoly over it. The roots of the Northern League, however, can not be traced back fully to the new European Right-Wing populism, for it combines the anti-immigrant battle (especially where it is in opposition) with a reformist strategy (especially where it is in Government).
