Abstract:
This study applies Δ₄₇/U–Pb thermochronology to the Middle Jurassic carbonates exposed in the southeastern margin of the Paris Basin. By integrating clumped isotope analyses and U–Pb dating of diagenetic carbonates, we reconstruct the thermal and exhumation history of the sedimentary succession. The results revealed the occurrence of four diagenetic phases that precipitated from Early Paleogene to Quaternary, reflecting episodic meteoric fluid recharges and gradual cooling during tectonic uplift. Our findings indicate two major uplift periods, linked to the Pyrenean (Palaeocene to Mid-Eocene) and Alpine (Early Miocene to Quaternary) compressional phases, with exhumation rates of 37 m/Ma and 25 m/Ma, respectively. Total erosion is estimated at ~1000 ± 200 m and is consistent with regional apatite fission-track data. These findings establish Δ₄₇/U–Pb carbonate thermochronology as a robust tool for studying uplift dynamics and cooling/exhumation rates in sedimentary basins and mountain ranges and pave the way for applications worldwide.
