Abstract:
This essay examines Luca Ronconi’s 2007 stage adaptation of Fahrenheit 451, analysing its production, artistic choices, and critical reception. The study is based on materials from the archives of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano and the Teatro Stabile di Torino, including video recordings, press reviews, technical documentation, and the director’s statements. Produced as a collaboration between four major Italian theatres, Fahrenheit 451 was a large-scale project with significant institutional backing, involving a substantial budget and a complex technical setup. This adaptation does not merely recreate Bradbury’s dystopian world but transforms it into a reflection on contemporary society. Moving beyond the futuristic imagery of the novel, Ronconi reinterprets the play as an exploration of memory and cultural erosion. His direction underscores the idea that books need not be burned to disappear; a sealed, abandoned library serves the same purpose. Through an intricate scenic design – featuring mechanical elements, immersive projections, and a cold, metallic aesthetic – the performance suggests that the future imagined by Bradbury is not ahead of us but already part of our present. The production received mixed reviews. Some critics praised its visual impact and thematic relevance, while others questioned the text’s aging and Ronconi’s approach. Despite the divided opinions, Fahrenheit 451 proved to be a thought-provoking theatrical event, demonstrating Ronconi’s ability to reinterpret canonical texts through an innovative and unsettling lens.
